Jeffrey Epstein and Ghislaine Maxwell. These are the two known members of what many have termed an “elite pedophile ring”. How big does that ring extend? No one really knows. The Clintons, The Trumps, and the British royal family are just a few who have been implicated by association. While fighting against sex trafficking is a noble endeavor, it curiously became salient in the national consciousness after Black Lives Matter gained a growing voice and, even more curious, as a response to Black Lives Matter. While, certainly, there are those who earnestly want to fight against sex trafficking, there is a strong undercurrent in the “Save The Children” movement that seeks to divert focus from Black Lives Matter and delegitimize it. This is unfortunate, because the goals of Black Lives Matter are much needed for reigning in the elite.
Holding the powerful to account
The whole purpose of the Black Lives Matter movement is to give more power to everyday Americans and force those with power to be more accountable. While Black Lives Matter focuses on the plight of black people, their objectives benefit everyone. Their push for law enforcement reform would mean less potential for the elite to skirt responsibility for their actions. Their push for universal healthcare would empower the working class in the jobs market and make them less beholden to the elite. Their push for transparency, accountability, and limits in government would mean less power for the elite.
People keep talking about how this elite pedophile ring needs to be dismantled. But until we can hold those with power accountable for their actions, until the classist divide between the rich and poor shrinks, until there is more transparency in both the private and public sectors: Things like this will continue to happen and continue to be swept under the rug.
It’s important therefore to support those who are calling for law enforcement and criminal justice reform. It’s important to be advocating for transparency from our government and politicians – even when our favored party is in power. It’s important to listen to and protect whistleblowers. It’s important to push for changes that give more equability to the working class and minorities.
It’s all connected
While police brutality, lack of adequate healthcare for Americans, the firing of whistleblowers, or unlimited campaign contributions may seem separate to elite sex trafficking, it’s all deeply interconnected. These are all elements of the power structure that keep the elite inoculated from the consequences of their actions. Fighting against them by supporting Black Lives Matter and others helps reduce the privilege and power of the elite and their pawns and level the playing field we’re all on – making it more likely they will be held accountable for all their misdeeds, including being part of an elite pedophile ring.
Certainly, people should feel free, and even encouraged, to support #SaveTheChildren – as long as it doesn’t harm or delegitimize intersecting movements like Black Lives Matter. After all, supporting others as they fight for equal rights and equitable treatment is one of the best ways we can save everyone’s children.
